Maine is one of the few states that has a sizeable moose population and all of Oxford County is Maine Moose Country! The moose is an enormous and formidable creature. I have seen a lot of moose over the years and in recent years have gone looking for moose with my friend Brenda quite often. We have had some fun adventures. Moose are a sought after photographer's subject. The first time people see a moose up close they are in awe of its size. Even the babies are big.

Maine MoosePeople always are asking, "Where do we find the moose?" While my friend knows lots of moose secrets and hangouts where you can almost always see a moose, you can see a moose just about anywhere, especially in the middle of the road. So use caution when you travel in moose country, especially at night as moose are very hard to see in the dark. There are moose/vehicle collisions every year, so watch for the bright yellowMoose Road Sign moose signs, keep your eyes open and drive carefully. You might as well plan to let moose have the right of way because they will take it anyway and they are large enough to have it their way!

If you are going to go looking for moose to photograph, early, early morning is best. I have gone with Brenda as early as 4:30, but normally closer to 5:30 or 6:00 and we have had a few days where we saw 15 to 20 moose. I would say the average I have seen with her is about 3 to 5. Moose are often just inside the trees where the novice might not spot them, in boggy and marshy areas and often times along side the road. Sometimes they will head inside the woods if you stop your car fairly close to them and other times they will just stand motionless or continue eating. I have always been amazed at how long they can stand without moving, especially when you can see them, but they are partially hidden by a tree or bush and you are waiting patiently for them to move so you can get a better photo.

Whatever you do, DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR CAR and NEVER EVER APPROACH A MOOSE. While they seem shy and elusive they can instantly become aggressive and dangerous.  A cow with a baby is going to be Maine Mooseextremely protective and during the rut (mating season), bulls are not in any mood to be annoyed. Having said all that, there are safe ways to get good photos of moose. There are quite a few moose tour companies all over Maine. They take you to specific areas where moose "hangout."

You get to ride in a comfortable van or bus and can concentrate on looking for the moose. There are also some boat tours that take you out on a lake where moose are often found. Seeing a big ole moose in the water is pretty impressive.... actually seeing a big ole moose anywhere is pretty impressive!

Don't be disappointed if you don't get the perfect photograph. Next to Brenda, I may have the largest collection of moose "butt" shots there is. It's the easiest photo to get ... you know ...  the one that "got away!" Enjoy your visit to Maine and be sure to visit the MOOSE of Oxford County!
