Maine’s Spectacular Foliage Display

Once a year, Maine comes alive with color. Spectacular blazes of crimson, orange, and yellow surround visitors as they view nature’s annual autumn display. People come from everywhere to see the breathtaking beauty of fall in Maine. This year was amazing, and it isn’t over yet. Everything is wrapped in a warm glow of color. Rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds reflect the glorious colors of the trees.

Maine Chowder Recipes

Maine Clam Chowder RecipeTraditional Maine Clam Chowder

You haven’t had a real “clam chowda” until you have had Maine Clam Chowder. This is a traditional recipe similar to those made in Maine kitchens for over 200 years.

Here is what you need:
4-5 dozen hard-shell clams washed and scrubbed clean
8 to 10 slices of bacon or a fist sized chunk of salt pork
1 large onion chopped coarsely chopped
8 medium sized potatoes, peeled, and cut in bite-sized chunks
2 cups of whole milk
2 cups of evaporated milk
1 stick of butter

Maine Events for June 2015

Maine Lilac FestivalsJune is a busy month in Maine. There is so much going on you will need to mark your calendar so you don’t miss anything.

June 5th and 6th is the Maine Fiber Frolic at the Windsor Fairgrounds at Ridge Road and Welcome St. Lots will be happening, including workshops, sheep dog demonstrations, vendors and much more. It’s an inexpensive way to have a great day and support fiber arts in Maine at the same time. Only $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for senior adults, and children under 12 are free.

June 6 is the 6th annual Mechanic Falls Community Days featuring a pancake breakfast, Horse Drawn wagons, games, a couple’s competition, a duck race, live entertainment, a chicken BBQ, and so much more. It all takes place at the intersection of Elm St. and Lewiston Road.

June 6th and 7th – Phillips Summer Celebration WOW – It’s the weekend-long Lilac Festival at Sandy River Gardens –¬† town-wide garage sales (LOVE these) Huge farmers market on Saturday and Huge Flea Market, Maine Woods storytelling, a concert, Historic Society (Phillips and Madrid) history tour, train rides on the historic narrow-gauge railroad on Sunday and lots of chances to win prizes from area businesses.

June 7th – 13th – Kennebunkport Fine Living Festival includes and amazing fine food and art festival in a premier Maine village on the coast – many art shows, amazing cooking demonstrations, live music, food and wine tastings…. so much to love!!

June 13th – Margaretta Days Festival in Machias – Join in the celebration of the first naval battle of the American Revolution on June 12th of 1775. Admission is FREE Lots of fun and some education thrown in too, from the parade to the encampment of period soldiers and Passamaquoddy Indians. Demonstrations includetimber framing, a black smith, weaving, fur trapping, and lots more. there is also an antler toss, children’s area, storytelling, many local crafters, delicious food and of course PRIZES!

Mish the Musroom Man by C. JohnsonJune 14th – Annual Old Port Festival at the Old Port area of Portland. Celebrate the start of summer surrounded by talented Maine people, including multiple music stages, frist Friday art walk, Circus in the Square, Downtown Scavenger Hunt, Working Waterfront Tour, A 90s Gondola Wheel offering rides, and Bridgton Maine’s Children’s author and illustrator Cheryl Johnson. She will not only delight you with her amazing children’s books for all ages (grownups really love them), she will introduce you to Mish the Mushroom Man and Sidley the Snail and his “snail floater.” Cheryl is talented and FUN!! Are You Ready For Spring 2015?

spring crocusSpring has finally arrived in Maine. Lots of snow has already melted, streams and rivers are overflowing, snow piles are getting smaller, crocus are peeking out, and the air smells fresh and clean.

A lot is going on in Maine this spring, and we hope you will want to attend some of the following events.

Fishermen’s Festival – Boothbay Harbor
Apr 24 thru Apr 26 – The yearly three-day festival starts Friday evening when you can enjoy the Miss Shrimp Contest. On Saturday activities start early and include trap hauling, a codfish relay, old-fashioned fish fry, lobster crate races, and lots more. The Blessing of the Fleet Memorial Service and the boat parade will be on Sunday in Boothbay Harbor.

Kennebunk May Day Festival
May 2nd – Enjoy the Kennebunk Annual May Day Festival for a day of family fun. Participate in most events for free. Enjoy a pancake breakfast and then visit the climbing wall, the photo booth, the parade, craft fair, and live music up and down the street.

Bath Mayfest
May 2nd – Start the day with a pancake breakfast, and then enjoy the many events including maypole dancing, a scavenger hunt, face painting, live music, an afternoon barbeque, and lots more. The Bath Citywide Yardsale is also part of the event and it is the largest yard sale in the state of Maine and one you won’t want to miss!

The Benton Alewife Festival
May 15 thru May 16 – This is a great celebration with a number of family friendly activities that are all free. Starting the day before the event is the Eating with the Alewifes at 5 p.m. at Benton Grange, 29 River Road. For tickets to the dinner phone (207) 453-7191. Events on Saturday include: Free Batting Cages/Mini Golf at the Benton Family Fun Park, Free Shuttle to and from the Benton Dam to witness the fish ladder and Alewife harvest up close, Face Painting, Rainbow Loom Bracelet making, Alewife Fairy House Building, and lots of other activities.

Spring Festival – Wolfe’s Neck Farm
May 30th from 10 am to 2 pm – This is a wonderful fun learning experience for the whole family in a lovley oceanfront setting.Explore the trails and gardens and then enjoy meeting the animals, try fiber arts, learn about seeds and planting and for the little ones there will be lots of craft activities and face-painting.
